The Perfect Fit: Understanding the Frame Measurements

The Perfect Fit: Understanding the Frame Measurements
Chet Glasses in Black, Measurements 50×19/145

All Black Eyewear’s frames come with 3 numbers engraved on the inside of the left temple.

50×25/150, 54×20/145, 59×20/150, 62×13/145, 54×25/155….

These numbers represent the frame measurements and define its size; the lens diameter, the bridge width, and the length of the temples, all in millimeters.

But how do you read these measurements and use this information to better understand if a pair of glasses is right for you?

THE LENS DIAMETER

Woody glasses in Black, Lenses Diameter 48

The first number represents the width of the lens measured measures horizontally at the widest point.

In most cases, the size of your lenses is a matter of personal preference. However, the combination of your unique features and prescription might be more suitable for a specific size. If you need varifocal lenses, our team at hello@blackeyewear.com will be happy to guide you in your choice.

THE BRIDGE WIDTH

Woody glasses in Black, Bridge Width 22

The bridge size is the distance between the lenses in millimeters.

This is one of the most important features that will define the comfort of your frame. The ideal fit of the bridge depends on the width of the wearers nose. If the bridge size is too narrow the glasses will sit too high on the brow line.
We dedicated an entire post to the different bridge designs, you can read it here.

THE LENGTH OF THE TEMPLES

Woody glasses in Black, Temple Length 145

The third number is the length of the temples measured from the frame hinge to the back tip of the temple.

There is standardised ratio between the overall frame size and its temples length. The side temple should be long enough to sit comfortably and hook behind your ears with the right amount of pressure. We explore how different side temple designs affect the fit in our dedicated post, you can read it here.

Remember: two frames that have identical measurements can fit differently, depending on the bridge style, frame shape, and design.
